Abstract
Machiavellism in Obasanjo's political dispensation is a subject that requires careful philosophical evaluation to understand the complexities and implications of his leadership style. This research delves into the key characteristics of Machiavellism as outlined in Niccolò Machiavelli's works and examines how they manifest in the political actions and decisions of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. By analyzing specific instances and policies during Obasanjo's tenure, this study aims to illuminate the extent to which Machiavellian principles were employed in his governance. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing a combination of primary sources such as Obasanjo's speeches, interviews, and policy documents, as well as secondary sources including scholarly articles and historical accounts. By critically analyzing these sources through a philosophical lens, the study seeks to identify Machiavellian strategies employed by Obasanjo and evaluate their ethical and practical implications. Furthermore, the research aims to explore the motivations behind Obasanjo's political decisions and assess the impact of Machiavellism on governance, democracy, and development in Nigeria. Key themes that will be explored in this research include the concept of political expediency, manipulation of public perception, use of fear and intimidation, and the prioritization of power and stability over moral considerations. By examining these themes in the context of Obasanjo's political dispensation, this study will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of power and leadership in Nigeria and contribute to the broader discourse on Machiavellism in contemporary politics. The findings of this research are expected to shed light on the philosophical underpinnings of Obasanjo's leadership style and its implications for governance in Nigeria. By critically evaluating the extent to which Machiavellian principles were employed during Obasanjo's tenure, this study aims to deepen our understanding of the complexities of political leadership and the ethical dilemmas faced by leaders in navigating power dynamics. Ultimately, this research seeks to provoke critical reflection on the role of Machiavellism in shaping political behavior and decision-making processes, and its implications for democracy and ethical governance.
