Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The practice of Osu in contemporary Igbo society remains a complex and contentious issue. Osu refers to a group of people traditionally regarded as outcasts in Igbo communities due to their perceived spiritual contamination or dedication to deities. Despite efforts to eradicate this discriminatory practice, Osu stigma continues to exist in various forms, affecting individuals' social, economic, and psychological well-being. This research project seeks to provide a Christian theological evaluation of the Osu system in modern Igbo society. The study aims to explore the historical origins of the Osu system and its evolution over time, considering the impact of colonialism, Christianity, and modernization on its perpetuation. By examining the cultural, social, and religious dynamics surrounding the Osu tradition, the research intends to analyze how it aligns with Christian teachings on human dignity, equality, and love for one's neighbor. Furthermore, the project will investigate the role of churches in addressing and challenging the Osu stigma within Igbo communities. Through a combination of qualitative research methods such as interviews, surveys, and document analysis, the study will gather data from both Osu and non-Osu individuals, religious leaders, community members, and scholars. By engaging with diverse perspectives and experiences, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding the Osu phenomenon and its implications for Christian ethics and theology. The findings of this research project are expected to contribute to ongoing discussions on social justice, reconciliation, and cultural transformation within Igbo society. By offering a critical theological reflection on the Osu system, the study seeks to promote dialogue, awareness, and action towards dismantling discriminatory practices and promoting inclusivity, equality, and respect for human dignity. Ultimately, this research aspires to offer insights and recommendations for Christian communities, policymakers, and stakeholders on how to address the Osu stigma in ways that are consistent with the principles of justice, love, and solidarity espoused in the Christian faith. In conclusion, this research project represents a significant endeavor to examine the Osu system through a Christian theological lens, shedding light on the complexities and challenges inherent in addressing this deeply rooted form of discrimination in contemporary Igbo society.

Inspite of the overwhelming presence of Christianity in the area, many Christians pay lip service to the eradication of Osu Caste system. Not until something drastic is done, the phenomenon will persist. This study investigates the matter along Christian theological teachings. Painstaking efforts was taken to get information on this study.
