Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often resulting in motor impairments that require intensive and prolonged rehabilitation. Traditional rehabilitation methods can be repetitive and monotonous, leading to poor patient engagement and motivation. Virtual reality (VR) technology has emerged as a promising tool for improving rehabilitation outcomes by providing interactive and engaging environments for therapy. This thesis presents the development of a Virtual Reality-Based Rehabilitation System (VRRS) specifically designed for stroke patients to enhance their motor recovery process. The research begins with a comprehensive review of the literature on stroke rehabilitation, virtual reality technology, and the benefits of combining the two in therapy. The literature review highlights the potential of VR in facilitating motor learning, improving functional outcomes, and enhancing patient motivation and engagement during rehabilitation. The methodology section outlines the design and development process of the VRRS, including the selection of appropriate VR hardware and software components, the creation of interactive rehabilitation tasks and environments, and the integration of real-time feedback mechanisms to monitor patient progress. The research methodology also details the pilot testing phase conducted with stroke patients to evaluate the usability, effectiveness, and user experience of the VRRS. The findings section presents the results of the pilot study, demonstrating the feasibility and potential benefits of using the VRRS in stroke rehabilitation. The discussion delves into the implications of the findings, including the role of VR technology in enhancing motor recovery, promoting neuroplasticity, and improving patient adherence to therapy. In conclusion, this thesis proposes a novel Virtual Reality-Based Rehabilitation System as an innovative approach to stroke rehabilitation that can address the limitations of traditional therapy methods and improve patient outcomes. The VRRS offers a customizable and interactive platform for delivering engaging rehabilitation exercises tailored to individual patient needs, fostering a more motivating and stimulating environment for recovery. Future research directions include expanding the VRRS to target other neurological conditions and conducting larger-scale clinical trials to validate its effectiveness in improving functional outcomes for stroke patients. Keywords Stroke Rehabilitation, Virtual Reality, Motor Recovery, Patient Engagement, Neuroplasticity, Therapy Adherence, Interactive Environments.
