The rapid expansion and ubiquity of social media platforms have significantly impacted various aspects of modern society, including language use and evolution. This thesis investigates the influence of social media on language evolution through a sociolinguistic lens. The study delves into how social media platforms have altered language patterns, communication styles, and linguistic norms, leading to the emergence of new linguistic phenomena and changes in language behavior. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, outlining the background of the study, problem statement, research objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. The chapter sets the stage for the comprehensive exploration of the influence of social media on language evolution. Chapter Two comprises a thorough literature review that examines existing research on the relationship between social media and language evolution. It discusses ten key themes, including language variation on social media platforms, linguistic innovations, language standardization, language change processes, sociolinguistic theories, digital communication styles, linguistic creativity, language ideologies, linguistic landscapes, and the impact of social media on language communities. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in this study. It includes the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, ethical considerations, limitations of the methodology, and the rationale behind the chosen research approach.
