Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of social media on the evolution of language, focusing specifically on English slang usage. The proliferation of social media platforms in recent years has significantly transformed the way individuals communicate and interact with one another. This study aims to explore how social media platforms serve as catalysts for the emergence, dissemination, and adoption of new slang terms and expressions within the English language. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the linguistic features of slang used on popular social media platforms, this research seeks to shed light on the mechanisms through which social media influences language evolution. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, offering a background of the study, outlining the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter 2 presents a detailed literature review, encompassing ten key themes related to language evolution, slang usage, and the role of social media in shaping linguistic trends.
