Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of bilingualism on language acquisition in young children. The study aims to explore how being exposed to and actively using two languages from an early age influences the language development of children. The research is guided by the overarching question of whether bilingualism offers cognitive and linguistic advantages or challenges for young learners. Chapter One provides the introduction to the study, outlining the background and rationale for the research. It presents the problem statement, objectives of the study, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms related to bilingualism and language acquisition in young children. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review that examines existing studies, theories, and findings related to bilingualism and language development in children. The review covers topics such as cognitive benefits of bilingualism, language processing in bilingual individuals, and the influence of bilingualism on academic performance. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in this study. It includes information on the research design, participant selection criteria, data collection methods, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations. The chapter also discusses the limitations and potential biases of the methodology chosen. Chapter Four presents the findings of the research, analyzing the data collected from young bilingual children.
