Abstract
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of code-switching among bilingual speakers in a multilingual context. Code-switching is a common linguistic practice that involves the alternation between two or more languages within a conversation or discourse. The study aims to explore the patterns, motivations, and implications of code-switching among bilingual speakers in a multilingual environment. Through a comprehensive literature review, the thesis examines existing research on code-switching and its relevance in sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and language contact studies. Chapter One provides an introduction to the topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. Chapter Two consists of a detailed literature review that synthesizes previous studies on code-switching, bilingualism, language contact, and sociolinguistic theories related to language alternation. The review covers ten key themes, including the types of code-switching, motivations for code-switching, cognitive mechanisms, social factors, and the impact of code-switching on language proficiency and identity. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, detailing the research design, data collection methods, participant selection criteria, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations. The methodology section includes eight sub-sections that provide a comprehensive overview of the research process, ensuring the validity and reliability of the findings. In Chapter Four, the thesis presents a thorough discussion of the research findings, including the analysis of code-switching patterns, the identification of dominant languages, the functions of code-switching, and the sociolinguistic factors influencing language alternation.
