Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of code-switching on language processing in bilingual individuals. Code-switching, the practice of alternating between two or more languages within a single conversation or sentence, is a common phenomenon in bilingual communities. The study aims to explore how code-switching influences language processing in bilingual individuals, focusing on cognitive, linguistic, and social aspects. The research methodology employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A sample of bilingual individuals was selected to participate in language tasks and interviews to gather insights into their language processing strategies and attitudes towards code-switching. The findings from the study revealed that code-switching has both positive and negative effects on language processing in bilingual individuals. On one hand, code-switching can facilitate communication and enhance linguistic flexibility, allowing speakers to express themselves more effectively. On the other hand, excessive code-switching may lead to confusion, cognitive overload, and difficulties in language comprehension. The discussion of the findings delves into the cognitive mechanisms involved in code-switching, such as language control, lexical access, and cognitive load. The linguistic implications of code-switching are also highlighted, including the role of language dominance, language proficiency, and language context in shaping code-switching patterns. Additionally, the social factors influencing code-switching behavior, such as identity, social norms, and communication goals, are examined. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the impact of code-switching on language processing in bilingual individuals. By understanding the cognitive, linguistic, and social dynamics of code-switching, educators, policymakers, and language researchers can develop strategies to support bilingual individuals in navigating their multilingual environments effectively. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of code-switching on language development and cognitive functions in bilingual populations.
