Abstract
This research project aimed to conduct a cost and time study of library programs, services, and collections to better understand resource allocation and efficiency at our library. The methodology involved tracking the expenses associated with various programs and services, as well as analyzing the time spent by staff on different tasks related to collections management and program delivery. The outcomes of the study provided valuable insights into the costs associated with running different library programs and services, as well as the time investment required from staff members. By examining the cost and time data together, we were able to identify areas where resources were being underutilized or where efficiencies could be improved. One significant finding of the study was the discrepancy between the perceived and actual costs of certain programs. For example, some programs that were thought to be relatively inexpensive were found to require significant staff time and resources to operate effectively. This information has prompted a reevaluation of program priorities and resource allocation to ensure that resources are being allocated in a way that aligns with the library's goals and objectives. Another key outcome of the study was the identification of bottlenecks in workflow processes related to collections management. By tracking the time spent on different tasks, we were able to pinpoint areas where inefficiencies were slowing down operations and impacting staff productivity. This has led to the implementation of new workflows and procedures aimed at streamlining processes and improving overall efficiency in collections management. Overall, the cost and time study has provided our library with valuable data to inform decision-making and resource allocation. By understanding the true costs and time investments associated with different programs, services, and collections management tasks, we are better equipped to make informed decisions about how to allocate resources effectively and ensure that our library operates efficiently and in line with our strategic priorities.
