Thesis Abstract

Library services play a crucial role in supporting the academic success of students in virtual high schools, virtual colleges and universities, as well as those who are homeschooled. With the increasing popularity of online education, the provision of quality library services tailored to the unique needs of remote learners has become essential. This research project aims to investigate the current state of library services for virtual high schools, virtual colleges and universities, and homeschooled students, identify challenges and opportunities, and propose recommendations for improvement. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders in the field of online education and library science. Surveys will be distributed to virtual school administrators, educators, librarians, and students to gather data on the types of library services currently available, their effectiveness, and areas for improvement. Interviews will be conducted with a select group of experts to gain deeper insights into best practices and innovative approaches to virtual library services. Key areas of focus will include digital resource access, information literacy instruction, research assistance, and collaboration opportunities. The research will explore how virtual libraries can effectively provide access to e-books, academic journals, databases, and other electronic resources to support the curriculum and research needs of remote learners. It will also investigate the role of librarians in delivering online information literacy instruction, research assistance, and reference services to help students develop critical thinking and research skills. Challenges such as limited funding, technological barriers, and lack of professional development opportunities for virtual librarians will be examined, along with potential solutions to address these issues. The study will also explore opportunities for virtual libraries to enhance collaboration with virtual schools, colleges, universities, and homeschooling communities to expand access to resources and services. The findings of this research project will contribute to the development of best practices for virtual library services, inform policy decisions, and guide future research in the field of online education and library science. By improving the quality and accessibility of library services for virtual learners, this study aims to support their academic success and lifelong learning goals.
