Abstract
Indigenous book publishing in Nigeria faces a myriad of challenges that impede its growth and sustainability. This study investigates the problems encountered by indigenous book publishers in Nigeria and explores potential solutions to address these issues. The research utilized a mixed-method approach combining interviews, surveys, and document analysis to gather data from various stakeholders in the indigenous publishing sector. The findings reveal several key challenges hindering the growth of indigenous book publishing in Nigeria. These challenges include limited access to funding and financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure and technology, lack of government support and policies, piracy and intellectual property rights violations, as well as limited distribution networks. Furthermore, the study highlights the impact of these challenges on the quality and quantity of indigenous books published in Nigeria. The lack of financial resources and support often leads to low-quality production, limited print runs, and high prices of indigenous books, making them less accessible to the general public. Moreover, the absence of effective distribution channels hampers the reach of indigenous books to wider audiences within and outside Nigeria. In response to these challenges, the study suggests several strategies to enhance the sustainability and growth of indigenous book publishing in Nigeria. These strategies include the need for increased government support through funding, policies, and incentives to promote the development of the indigenous publishing industry. Strengthening infrastructure and technology within the sector is also crucial to improving production quality and efficiency. Additionally, the study recommends the establishment of partnerships and collaborations between indigenous publishers, authors, distributors, and other stakeholders to expand distribution networks and reach a larger audience. Addressing issues of piracy and intellectual property rights violations through stricter enforcement mechanisms is essential to protect the interests of indigenous publishers and authors. Overall, this research sheds light on the critical challenges facing indigenous book publishing in Nigeria and proposes actionable solutions to support the growth and sustainability of the sector. By addressing these challenges and implementing the suggested strategies, indigenous book publishing in Nigeria can overcome its obstacles and thrive in a competitive global market.
