Abstract
The availability of diverse and relevant information materials in academic libraries is crucial for supporting teaching, learning, and research activities in Nigerian universities. This study aims to explore the sources of information materials in Nigerian academic libraries to understand the extent of their collections and the strategies employed to acquire new materials. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys, interviews, and document analysis to gather comprehensive data. The study will focus on a select number of academic libraries in Nigeria, considering both federal and state universities to ensure a broad representation. Through surveys, data will be collected on the types of information materials available in these libraries, including books, journals, electronic resources, and special collections. Interviews with librarians and library staff will provide insights into the acquisition processes, including budget allocation, selection criteria, and vendor relationships. Document analysis will further complement the data collected, examining acquisition policies, collection development plans, and usage statistics. By triangulating data from multiple sources, this study aims to provide a holistic view of the sources of information materials in Nigerian academic libraries. The findings will shed light on the challenges faced by these libraries in maintaining up-to-date and diverse collections, as well as the strategies that have been successful in enhancing their holdings. Furthermore, the study will explore the impact of digital technologies on the acquisition and availability of information materials in Nigerian academic libraries. With the increasing shift towards electronic resources, it is essential to understand how libraries are adapting their collection development strategies to meet the changing information needs of their users. By examining the role of online databases, e-books, and open access resources, this research will provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of academic library collections in Nigeria. Overall, this study seeks to contribute to the existing literature on academic libraries in Nigeria by providing a detailed analysis of the sources of information materials. By identifying best practices and challenges in collection development, the research aims to inform future strategies for enhancing the quality and relevance of library collections in Nigerian universities.
