Thesis Abstract

Petty traders play a significant role in the economy of many developing countries, providing essential goods and services to local communities. However, these traders often face challenges accessing the information they need to effectively run their businesses. This research project aims to explore the information needs of petty traders and how these needs can be addressed to support their businesses. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews to gather data from petty traders in urban markets. The surveys will focus on understanding the types of information petty traders require in their daily operations, such as market prices, customer preferences, and business regulations. The interviews will provide more in-depth insights into how petty traders currently access information, the challenges they face, and their suggestions for improving information access. The findings of this research will contribute to a better understanding of the specific information needs of petty traders and the barriers they encounter in accessing this information. By identifying these needs and challenges, policymakers, business support organizations, and other stakeholders can develop targeted interventions to improve information provision for petty traders. This, in turn, can help enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of petty trader businesses, ultimately contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction. The results of this study will be disseminated through academic publications, policy briefs, and presentations to relevant stakeholders. It is hoped that the findings will raise awareness of the information needs of petty traders and stimulate discussions on how best to support these entrepreneurs. Additionally, the research may inform the design of practical interventions, such as mobile information services or training programs, to empower petty traders with the information they need to thrive in their businesses. In conclusion, this research project aims to shed light on the information needs of petty traders and explore strategies for addressing these needs. By improving access to relevant information, petty traders can make more informed decisions, enhance their business operations, and contribute to local economic development. Ultimately, supporting petty traders in accessing the information they need can lead to more resilient and prosperous communities.
