Abstract
The academic staff union of polytechnics (ASUP) strike that occurred between 2011 and 2013 in Nigeria had significant implications for the higher education sector in the country. This index survey aimed to assess the impact of the strike on academic staff members in polytechnics across Nigeria. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from surveys with qualitative insights from interviews with key stakeholders. The findings of the survey revealed that the ASUP strike had a detrimental effect on academic staff members, with disruptions to teaching schedules, research activities, and overall productivity. Additionally, the prolonged nature of the strike exacerbated financial challenges for many staff members, as salaries were withheld during the period of industrial action. Furthermore, the survey highlighted the underlying issues that led to the ASUP strike, including demands for improved working conditions, salary adjustments, and enhanced infrastructure in polytechnics. These findings underscored the need for sustainable solutions to address the grievances of academic staff members and prevent future strikes in the sector. The qualitative data from interviews provided valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of academic staff members directly affected by the strike. Participants expressed frustration with the lack of government intervention and the slow pace of negotiations between ASUP and relevant authorities. Many staff members emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of the strike to ensure a more stable and conducive work environment in polytechnics. Overall, this index survey sheds light on the multifaceted impact of the 2011-2013 ASUP strike on academic staff members in Nigerian polytechnics. The findings underscore the need for proactive measures to address the grievances of staff members, improve working conditions, and foster a more collaborative relationship between stakeholders in the higher education sector. By addressing these issues, policymakers and university administrators can work towards creating a more sustainable and productive environment for academic staff members in polytechnics across Nigeria.

Strike also was defined as a situation whereby a group of workers stop working for a period of time because they went a better pay or better working conditions. The 2013 academic staff union of polytechnics (ASUP) strike was taken upon because the conditions which they expected the federal government to work on so as to enhance teaching in the various polytechnics in the country was over looked and not paid attention to by the government.
