Abstract
Homosexuality and same-sex marriage have been topics of significant legal and societal debate globally, and Nigeria is no exception to this discourse. This research project delves into a legal and jurisprudential analysis of homosexuality and same-sex marriages, specifically supporting the Nigerian position on these issues. The study examines the historical and cultural context of Nigeria in relation to homosexuality, highlighting the strong influence of traditional beliefs and religious values that shape the country's stance on these matters. Through a comprehensive review of Nigerian laws and jurisprudence, this research explores the legal framework surrounding homosexuality and same-sex marriages in the country. It delves into relevant legislation, including the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013, to understand the legal basis for Nigeria's position on these issues. Additionally, the study analyzes key judicial decisions and legal interpretations that have shaped the legal landscape concerning homosexuality in Nigeria. Furthermore, this research project investigates the societal attitudes towards homosexuality and same-sex marriages in Nigeria, considering the perspectives of various stakeholders, including the government, religious institutions, civil society groups, and the general public. By examining public discourse and media representations, the study aims to provide insights into the underlying factors that contribute to the prevailing views on homosexuality in Nigerian society. In supporting the Nigerian position on homosexuality and same-sex marriages, this research project considers arguments based on moral, cultural, and religious grounds. It explores the traditional values and norms that are deeply ingrained in Nigerian society and how these influence the legal and social responses to issues of homosexuality. Additionally, the study examines the constitutional provisions and human rights considerations that underpin Nigeria's approach to addressing homosexuality within its legal framework. Overall, this research project seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of homosexuality and same-sex marriages in Nigeria from a legal and jurisprudential perspective. By exploring the historical, cultural, legal, and societal dimensions of these issues, the study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on homosexuality in Nigeria and provide a nuanced understanding of the factors shaping the country's position on this contentious subject.
