Abstract
Poverty reduction and sustainable development in Nigeria are two critical interconnected issues that have been at the forefront of the country's development agenda. Nigeria, as a developing country, has been grappling with high levels of poverty and inequality, despite its vast natural resources and potential for economic growth. This research explores the relationship between poverty reduction and sustainable development in Nigeria, aiming to identify strategies and policies that can effectively address these challenges. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of poverty indicators and qualitative assessment of sustainable development initiatives in Nigeria. Data from national surveys, reports, and case studies are used to examine the current state of poverty in Nigeria and to evaluate the impact of various development programs and policies on poverty reduction. The qualitative analysis involves interviews with key stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, and representatives from non-governmental organizations, to gain insights into the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the country. The findings of the research highlight the complex nature of poverty in Nigeria, which is influenced by a range of factors including economic, social, and environmental issues. While economic growth has been significant in recent years, it has not translated into commensurate poverty reduction due to high levels of inequality and limited access to basic services. Sustainable development initiatives in Nigeria have made some progress in improving access to education, healthcare, and clean energy, but more efforts are needed to ensure that these benefits reach the most vulnerable populations. The research also identifies several key policy recommendations to promote poverty reduction and sustainable development in Nigeria. These include enhancing social protection programs to support the most vulnerable groups, investing in rural development and agriculture to create employment opportunities, and strengthening environmental conservation efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of good governance, transparency, and accountability in ensuring the effective implementation of development policies and programs. Overall, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on poverty reduction and sustainable development in Nigeria by providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for addressing these issues. By identifying key strategies and policy recommendations, this study aims to inform decision-makers and stakeholders on how to promote inclusive and sustainable development that benefits all segments of Nigerian society.

1.1 Background of the Study
Many people when they hear or read about the word poverty will automatically think and look at poverty as being simply a lack of money. This is partly true but for a better understanding of poverty it is necessary to go beyond this simple or common sense, definition of poverty. Poverty is much more than a simple lack of money. For example, if you were stranded on a desert island and you had several thousand dollars or pounds in cash, while those around you had things like food, clothing and shelter would be in poverty? You could not eat your money, nor could. Your fellow inhabitants might not even want your money, particularly if they believe that a rescue is not eminent. In such a situation, lack of money means equal poverty. This is, however, only part of the story

with regard to poverty yet in order to understand poverty and inequality, we must probe beneath surface reality and go beyond the common sense explanation which is simply another for cliché.
