Abstract
This research project delves into the endeavors of Nigeria to avert the second wave of military upsurge in Africa, with a specific focus on former President Goodluck Jonathan's role in the Mali crisis. As the most populous country on the continent and a key player in regional peacekeeping efforts, Nigeria's involvement in preventing military coups and uprisings is crucial for stability in Africa. The study examines the various diplomatic, political, and military strategies employed by Nigeria under President Jonathan's leadership to address the crisis in Mali and prevent the spread of instability to other nations in the region. Through a comprehensive analysis of President Jonathan's actions and decisions during the Mali crisis, this research aims to shed light on the effectiveness of Nigeria's approach in mitigating the threat of a second wave of military upsurge in Africa. By drawing on a combination of primary sources, including official statements, speeches, and policy documents, as well as secondary sources such as academic articles and news reports, this study provides a detailed account of the initiatives undertaken by Nigeria to uphold peace and security in Mali. Furthermore, the research project explores the challenges faced by Nigeria in navigating the complex political landscape of Mali and the wider West African region. Factors such as ethnic tensions, transnational terrorism, and the involvement of external actors are taken into consideration to assess the impact of these dynamics on Nigeria's efforts to prevent the escalation of the Mali crisis into a full-blown military conflict. By analyzing the successes and shortcomings of Nigeria's intervention in Mali, this study offers valuable insights into the broader implications for peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Africa. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on African security and governance by offering a nuanced examination of Nigeria's role in preventing military upsurge in the region. By focusing on the case of the Mali crisis and President Goodluck Jonathan's leadership, this study underscores the importance of proactive and coordinated efforts by African nations to address threats to peace and stability on the continent.
