Abstract
Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that has been used in traditional medicine for its potential therapeutic properties. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity and phytochemical composition of mistletoe leaves. The antimicrobial analysis was conducted using the disc diffusion method against a panel of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The results revealed that the methanol extract of mistletoe leaves exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains. The phytochemical screening of the extract identified the presence of various bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Further analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) identified specific compounds in the extract, including viscotoxin and lectin, which are known for their antimicrobial properties. This research provides valuable insights into the potential antimicrobial activity of mistletoe leaves and highlights the importance of phytochemical analysis in understanding the therapeutic properties of medicinal plants. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the mechanisms of action of mistletoe leaf extracts and their potential applications in the development of novel antimicrobial agents.
