Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of probiotics on gut health in individuals diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits, affecting the quality of life of millions of individuals worldwide. Probiotics, defined as live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts, have gained attention for their potential therapeutic effects on gut health and digestive disorders. The aim of this study is to critically evaluate existing literature to determine the efficacy of probiotics in managing symptoms associated with IBS and improving overall gut health. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, background information on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the problem statement, objectives of the study, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review comprising ten key aspects related to probiotics, gut health, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and previous studies investigating the use of probiotics in managing IBS symptoms. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, search criteria for literature review, inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies, data extraction process, quality assessment of included studies, and statistical analysis for meta-analysis. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations and potential biases in the research process. Chapter Four presents a detailed discussion of the findings derived from the systematic review and meta-analysis. The results are analyzed and interpreted to assess the overall impact of probiotics on gut health in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses are conducted to explore variations in study outcomes and identify potential sources of heterogeneity. Finally, Chapter Five offers a conclusion and summary of the thesis, highlighting the key findings, implications for clinical practice, recommendations for future research, and potential limitations of the study. The research findings contribute to the growing body of evidence on the role of probiotics in managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome and provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals, researchers, and individuals seeking alternative treatments for gastrointestinal disorders. In conclusion, this thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of probiotics on gut health in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome through a systematic review and meta-analysis, shedding light on the potential benefits of probiotic supplementation in managing symptoms of IBS and improving overall digestive health.
