Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, making it a significant public health concern. Recent advances in the treatment of stroke have significantly improved outcomes for patients. This review focuses on some of the key developments in stroke treatment, including advancements in acute ischemic stroke therapy, neuroprotective strategies, and rehabilitation techniques. One of the major breakthroughs in acute ischemic stroke treatment is the advent of thrombolytic therapy, such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which can dissolve blood clots and restore blood flow to the affected area of the brain. In addition to tPA, endovascular treatments, such as mechanical thrombectomy, have revolutionized stroke care by enabling the removal of large clots from blood vessels in the brain, leading to improved outcomes for patients with large vessel occlusions. Neuroprotective strategies aim to minimize brain damage following a stroke by targeting various pathways involved in neuronal injury. Recent research has focused on developing neuroprotective agents that can preserve brain tissue and improve functional outcomes in stroke patients. These agents may target excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, among other pathways involved in stroke pathophysiology. Rehabilitation is a crucial aspect of stroke treatment that aims to help patients regain lost functions and improve their quality of life. Recent advances in stroke rehabilitation include the use of technology-assisted therapies, such as robotics and virtual reality, which can enhance motor recovery and functional outcomes in stroke survivors. Additionally, personalized rehabilitation programs tailored to individual patient needs have shown promise in optimizing recovery trajectories and long-term outcomes. In conclusion, recent advances in the treatment of stroke have transformed the management of this debilitating condition, leading to improved outcomes for patients. The development of acute ischemic stroke therapies, neuroprotective strategies, and rehabilitation techniques has significantly enhanced the quality of care provided to stroke survivors. Continued research and innovation in stroke treatment are essential to further improve outcomes and reduce the global burden of stroke-related morbidity and mortality.
