Abstract
This thesis aims to investigate the various factors that influence the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in rural communities. Sustainable agricultural practices are crucial for improving agricultural productivity, conserving natural resources, and enhancing the livelihoods of rural farmers. However, the adoption of these practices in rural communities is often influenced by a multitude of factors that can either facilitate or hinder their uptake. Understanding these factors is essential for designing effective strategies to promote sustainable agriculture in rural areas. The research methodology employed in this study involved a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. A comprehensive review of existing literature on sustainable agriculture and adoption factors provided a theoretical framework for the study. This literature review identified key themes and gaps in the existing research, guiding the development of research questions and hypotheses. Data collection involved surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with farmers, agricultural extension officers, and other stakeholders in rural communities. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods to identify patterns, relationships, and factors influencing the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. The findings of this study revealed a range of factors that influence the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in rural communities. These factors include socio-economic characteristics of farmers, access to resources and information, institutional support, market dynamics, and cultural beliefs and practices. The study also identified barriers and challenges that hinder the adoption of sustainable practices, such as lack of awareness, inadequate training, and limited access to inputs and technologies. Based on the findings, recommendations are proposed to enhance the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in rural communities. These recommendations include targeted training programs, extension services, policy support, and market linkages to facilitate the uptake of sustainable practices. The study highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and participatory approaches to promote sustainable agriculture in rural areas. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the existing body of knowledge on sustainable agriculture and adoption factors by providing empirical evidence from rural communities. The findings have implications for policymakers, development practitioners, and researchers working in the field of agriculture and rural development. By addressing the factors influencing the adoption of sustainable practices, this study aims to contribute to the promotion of sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods.
