Abstract
This thesis presents a comprehensive assessment of sustainable agricultural practices for small-scale farmers in rural communities. The study aims to address the challenges faced by small-scale farmers in adopting and implementing sustainable agricultural practices, with a focus on enhancing productivity, environmental sustainability, and economic viability. Through a mixed-methods research approach, including surveys, interviews, and on-site observations, data was collected from small-scale farmers in rural communities to understand their current practices, constraints, and opportunities for adopting sustainable agricultural methods. The literature review in this thesis highlights the importance of sustainable agriculture in promoting food security, environmental conservation, and rural development. Key concepts such as agroecology, organic farming, integrated pest management, and conservation agriculture are discussed to provide a theoretical framework for understanding sustainable agricultural practices. The review also examines the challenges faced by small-scale farmers in accessing resources, knowledge, and markets to transition to sustainable agriculture. In the research methodology section, the study details the data collection methods, sampling techniques, and analysis procedures employed to evaluate the sustainable agricultural practices of small-scale farmers. The methodology includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches to gather insights into the current practices, perceptions, and barriers faced by farmers in adopting sustainable agriculture. The findings of this study reveal that small-scale farmers in rural communities face various challenges in adopting sustainable agricultural practices, including limited access to inputs, knowledge, and technical support. Despite these challenges, the study identifies several successful case studies where farmers have successfully implemented sustainable practices, resulting in increased yields, improved soil health, and reduced environmental impact. The discussion of findings section critically analyzes the data collected from small-scale farmers to assess the impact of sustainable agricultural practices on productivity, profitability, and environmental sustainability. The study highlights the importance of tailored solutions, capacity-building programs, and policy support to facilitate the adoption of sustainable agriculture among small-scale farmers in rural communities. In conclusion, this thesis emphasizes the significance of promoting sustainable agricultural practices among small-scale farmers to enhance food security, environmental sustainability, and rural livelihoods. The study provides recommendations for policymakers, extension services, and development organizations to support small-scale farmers in adopting sustainable agriculture. By addressing the challenges and opportunities for sustainable agriculture in rural communities, this research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development and agriculture in the context of small-scale farming.
