Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Home economics education plays a vital role in equipping students with essential life skills in areas such as nutrition, finance management, and household management. However, the teaching of home economics in senior secondary schools faces several challenges that impact its effectiveness. This study aims to explore the challenges and prospects of teaching home economics in senior secondary schools, with a focus on Oru East L.G.A as a case study. The research methodology employed in this study includes a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected through interviews with home economics teachers, students, and school administrators, as well as through questionnaires distributed to a sample of teachers and students. Additionally, classroom observations were conducted to provide further insights into the teaching practices and challenges faced by educators in the field of home economics. The findings of the study revealed various challenges faced by teachers in teaching home economics, including inadequate teaching resources, lack of training for teachers, and limited time allocated to the subject in the curriculum. Furthermore, societal perceptions of home economics as a less prestigious subject also contribute to the challenges faced by educators in promoting the subject among students. Despite these challenges, there are also prospects for the improvement of home economics education in senior secondary schools. The study identified the potential for integrating technology into teaching practices, providing continuous professional development for teachers, and collaborating with local communities to enhance the relevance of home economics education. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the challenges and prospects of teaching home economics in senior secondary schools in Oru East L.G.A. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in the education sector to address the existing challenges and explore opportunities for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of home economics education. By addressing these challenges and leveraging the prospects identified in this study, home economics education can play a more significant role in equipping students with essential life skills for their personal and professional development.
