Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Home economics education is a crucial aspect of the senior secondary school curriculum as it equips students with essential life skills for managing their homes, making informed consumer decisions, and preparing healthy meals. This research project aims to explore the challenges and prospects of teaching home economics in senior secondary schools, with a focus on Oru East Local Government Area. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. The challenges facing the teaching of home economics in senior secondary schools include inadequate funding for the procurement of equipment and materials, a lack of qualified teachers, and limited time allocated to the subject in the curriculum. Additionally, societal perceptions of home economics as a less important subject compared to traditional academic subjects pose a challenge to its effective teaching and learning in schools. These challenges may hinder students' ability to acquire practical skills and knowledge in areas such as cooking, sewing, budgeting, and nutrition. Despite these challenges, there are prospects for improving the teaching of home economics in senior secondary schools. Integrating technology into the curriculum can enhance students' learning experiences and make the subject more engaging and relevant to their lives. Professional development opportunities for home economics teachers can also improve their capacity to deliver quality instruction and stay updated on current trends in the field. Collaboration with industry partners and community organizations can provide students with real-world experiences and expose them to potential career pathways in home economics-related fields. In conclusion, the challenges of teaching home economics in senior secondary schools are significant but not insurmountable. By addressing issues related to funding, teacher training, curriculum design, and societal perceptions, it is possible to enhance the quality of home economics education and better prepare students for practical aspects of adult life. This research project will contribute valuable insights into the current state of home economics education in Oru East Local Government Area and provide recommendations for improving the teaching and learning of the subject in senior secondary schools.
