Abstract
Colonialism has had a profound impact on indigenous cultures around the world, and Nigeria is no exception. This thesis explores the lasting effects of colonialism on the indigenous cultures of Nigeria, focusing on how colonial policies, practices, and ideologies have shaped and influenced the cultural landscape of the country. Through a comprehensive case study approach, this research delves into the specific ways in which colonialism has impacted traditional customs, languages, religions, social structures, and identities of indigenous communities in Nigeria. The study begins with an examination of the historical background of colonialism in Nigeria, tracing the arrival of European powers and the establishment of colonial rule in the region. It then highlights the various problems that arose as a result of colonial policies, including cultural marginalization, loss of autonomy, and the erosion of indigenous knowledge systems. The objectives of the study are to critically analyze the impact of colonialism on indigenous cultures in Nigeria, identify key areas of cultural transformation, and assess the implications for contemporary society.
