Colonialism has had a profound impact on indigenous cultures across Africa, with far-reaching consequences that continue to shape societies to this day. This thesis focuses on exploring the specific case of Nigeria to examine how colonial rule altered traditional cultural practices, beliefs, and identities of indigenous communities. Through a comprehensive review of historical documents, scholarly articles, and fieldwork data, this study aims to shed light on the complexities and nuances of the colonial legacy in Nigeria. The introduction sets the stage by providing background information on colonialism in Africa and the specific context of Nigeria. The problem statement highlights the need to understand how colonial policies disrupted indigenous cultures and the implications for contemporary society. The objectives of the study are to analyze the key mechanisms through which colonialism impacted indigenous cultures, identify the lasting effects of colonial rule on cultural practices, and assess the strategies employed by indigenous communities to resist cultural assimilation.
