Colonialism has had a profound impact on the cultural identities of African societies, shaping their values, beliefs, and practices in significant ways. This thesis explores the lasting effects of colonial rule on modern-day cultural identities in Africa, focusing on how historical events and power dynamics continue to influence social structures and individual perceptions. Through a comprehensive review of literature, this study examines the complexities of cultural identity formation in post-colonial Africa and the challenges faced by African societies in preserving their unique heritage while adapting to global influences. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study and outlining the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. Chapter Two offers a detailed literature review, analyzing ten key sources that shed light on the impact of colonialism on African cultural identities. Chapter Three discusses the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures. The chapter also explores ethical considerations and limitations that may have affected the research process. Chapter Four presents the findings of the study, highlighting key themes and patterns that emerged from the data analysis. This chapter offers an in-depth discussion of how colonial legacies continue to shape cultural identities in Africa and the various ways in which African societies are responding to these influences.
