Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Nuclear energy proliferation has been a significant global concern since the development of nuclear technology in the mid-20th century. This research project aims to explore the lessons learned from the proliferation of nuclear energy in third world nations between 1945 and 2006, focusing on the historical and international relations aspects of this complex issue. The period between 1945 and 2006 saw a rapid increase in the number of countries seeking to develop nuclear energy capabilities, driven by factors such as energy security, technological advancement, and national prestige. Third world nations, in particular, faced unique challenges and opportunities in their pursuit of nuclear technology, often navigating a delicate balance between the benefits of nuclear energy and the risks of proliferation. By examining case studies of third world nations that embarked on nuclear energy programs during this period, this research project seeks to identify key lessons and trends in nuclear energy proliferation. The project will analyze the motivations behind countries' decisions to pursue nuclear technology, the role of international actors in shaping proliferation dynamics, and the impact of nuclear energy programs on regional and global security. Furthermore, the project will investigate the effectiveness of international non-proliferation efforts in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons technology to third world nations. By studying the evolution of non-proliferation regimes and the responses of both nuclear-armed and non-nuclear states to proliferation challenges, this research aims to assess the successes and shortcomings of global efforts to control the spread of nuclear technology. In conclusion, this research project will contribute valuable insights into the history and international relations of nuclear energy proliferation in third world nations between 1945 and 2006. By examining the lessons learned from past proliferation experiences, the project aims to inform current policy debates on nuclear non-proliferation and energy security, offering recommendations for addressing the challenges posed by the continued spread of nuclear technology in the 21st century.
