Thesis Abstract

Pre-colonial relations among the Yorubas in Nigeria were characterized by a complex interplay of political, economic, and social factors that shaped the interactions among the various Yoruba kingdoms. This research project delves into the dynamics of these pre-colonial relations, focusing on the diplomatic strategies, trade networks, and cultural exchanges that defined the Yoruba societies before the advent of colonialism. The study employs a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on historical records, anthropological studies, and archaeological evidence to reconstruct the intricate web of relationships that existed among the Yoruba kingdoms. By examining the political structures of the major Yoruba kingdoms such as Ife, Oyo, and Ijebu, the research sheds light on how power dynamics and territorial disputes influenced diplomatic negotiations and alliances among the Yoruba states. Furthermore, the project investigates the role of trade in fostering connections among the Yoruba kingdoms and with neighboring regions. Trade routes crisscrossed the Yoruba territory, facilitating the exchange of goods, ideas, and technologies. This study explores the impact of trade on the economic development of the Yoruba societies and how commercial interests influenced diplomatic relations and conflicts among the different Yoruba states. In addition to political and economic factors, the research project also examines the cultural exchanges that took place among the Yoruba kingdoms. Art, religion, language, and social customs played a significant role in shaping inter-kingdom relations and creating a sense of shared identity among the Yoruba people. The study analyzes how cultural practices were used to forge alliances, resolve disputes, and maintain social cohesion within the Yoruba communities. Overall, this research project provides a comprehensive analysis of the pre-colonial relations among the Yorubas in Nigeria, highlighting the complexity and diversity of interactions that characterized the Yoruba societies before the colonial era. By exploring the diplomatic, economic, and cultural dimensions of these relations, the study offers valuable insights into the historical roots of contemporary international relations in Nigeria and the enduring legacy of the Yoruba civilization.
