Abstract
This research project explores the various factors that hinder students' commitment to the study of history. The study aims to identify and analyze the challenges faced by students in engaging with history as an academic discipline. Through a comprehensive literature review and primary data collection, the research examines the impact of factors such as curriculum relevance, teaching methodologies, student attitudes, and societal perceptions of history on students' interest and commitment to the subject. The findings suggest that one of the primary factors affecting students' commitment to history is the perception of the subject as irrelevant or disconnected from their lives. Many students struggle to see the practical value of studying history and fail to make connections between historical events and contemporary issues. Furthermore, the research highlights the role of teaching methodologies in shaping students' attitudes towards history. Traditional lecture-based approaches often fail to engage students effectively, leading to disinterest and lack of commitment. Moreover, the study reveals that the lack of emphasis on critical thinking and analytical skills in history education contributes to students' disengagement with the subject. Students often perceive history as a memorization-based discipline rather than a platform for developing essential skills such as critical analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. Additionally, the research explores the influence of peer attitudes and societal perceptions on students' commitment to history. Negative stereotypes surrounding the study of history as a difficult or boring subject can deter students from pursuing it with enthusiasm. The research also delves into the impact of digital distractions and the fast-paced modern lifestyle on students' ability to engage with historical content. The prevalence of technology and social media has altered students' attention spans and priorities, making it challenging for them to devote time and effort to studying history. Furthermore, the study examines the role of parental and institutional support in fostering students' commitment to history. Lack of encouragement from parents and educators can further diminish students' motivation to excel in the subject. In conclusion, this research project sheds light on the multifaceted factors that impede students' commitment to the study of history. By identifying these barriers and their implications, educators and policymakers can develop targeted strategies to enhance students' engagement with history and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the discipline.

INTRODUCTION

History is an important school subject which conveys invaluable lessons from the past and whose worth transcends regional, national and cultural boundaries. However, effective teaching and learning history in Nigerian Universities has long been blighted by problems and challenges that have often gone unaddressed. This problems and issues have consequently militated against the commitment of undergraduate students studying history. This study drawing on a sample size of 160 undergraduate students in the department of educational foundations and department of history in the university of Benin, examined “factors militating against students commitment to the study of history in the university of Benin”. The purposive and stratified research design was used for the study and data was collected using the self -structured questionnaire. the results and data gotten were analysed using mean statistics. The study found out that factors such as societal perception, methods of teaching, lack of field trips,lack of instructional materials, and teaching aids, peer group influence are the major problems plaguing the study of history in the university. It was therefore recommended that the subject should be placed on the right pedestal by the appropriate quarters hence improving societal perception. There should be more awareness and enlightenment on the appropriateness and advantages of studying history, the ministry of education in alliance with the federal government should invest more in providing history rooms and teaching aids for the department. the lecturers should always be resourceful and versatile to the class and endeavor to use teaching methods that keep the students interest alive, amongst others.
