Abstract
Nigeria has played a significant role in the formation and development of regional organizations in Africa. This research project examines the historical context and factors that have shaped Nigeria's involvement in regional organizations. The study focuses on key regional bodies such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), exploring Nigeria's contributions to these organizations. The research delves into Nigeria's foreign policy objectives and how they align with the goals of regional integration and cooperation. By analyzing Nigeria's leadership role in regional organizations, the study aims to understand the country's strategic interests and influence in shaping regional policies. Additionally, the research investigates the challenges and opportunities Nigeria faces in promoting regional integration and addressing common issues such as security, trade, and development. Through a comprehensive review of literature, policy documents, and interviews with key stakeholders, the research provides insights into Nigeria's multifaceted role within regional organizations. By examining the political, economic, and social dynamics at play, the study uncovers the complexities of Nigeria's engagement with regional partners and its impact on regional stability and development. Furthermore, the research explores the implications of Nigeria's regional leadership for broader continental and global governance. By analyzing Nigeria's interactions with other African countries and international actors, the study sheds light on the country's diplomatic strategies and soft power in advancing regional cooperation. Overall, this research project contributes to the understanding of Nigeria's role in regional organizations and its impact on African integration and development. By highlighting Nigeria's historical legacy and contemporary challenges in regional cooperation, the study offers valuable insights for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners working on regional governance and diplomacy in Africa.

Thesis Overview

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of Nigeria in the formation of regional organization (ECOWAS) considering the need for West Africa to have a regional organization with common goals and the formative years of ECOWAS. This research also examine the Nigeria’s interest in ECOWAS and the successes/challenges of the regional organization. Data was obtained from the secondary sources like Journals, textbooks, internet and all other secondary sources. More data were also gathered through interviews. The data obtained was analyzed using thematic format and a descriptive essay and the result revealed that Nigeria played a major role in the formation of ECOWAS because their special interest is in regional and borderless organization uniting the West African countries to improve trade and transportation with an introduction of common currency. Nigeria has played a leading role in funding the organization. However, the organization has not been able to achieve many of the goals in the mission system due to several challenges and the non supportive nature of some member countries. This study concludes that Nigeria should continue playing the big brother role to ensure the success of the regional organization. It however recommends that other west African countries should come together in cooperation to ensure the success of the organization.
