Abstract
This research project delves into the history of indigenous industries in Daura District during the period of colonial rule from 1903 to 1960. The study aims to explore the impact of colonial policies and practices on the traditional industries of the indigenous people in Daura, a region known for its rich cultural heritage and economic activities. By examining the changes and continuities in indigenous industries under colonial administration, this research seeks to uncover the ways in which colonial rule influenced the economic landscape and production methods in the district. Through a comprehensive analysis of archival sources, oral histories, and existing scholarly works, this study investigates the various indigenous industries that thrived in Daura District before and during colonial rule. It examines the role of the British colonial government in shaping the economic activities of the indigenous population, including the imposition of taxes, introduction of new technologies, and establishment of trade networks. Furthermore, the research explores how indigenous artisans and entrepreneurs responded to these colonial interventions and adapted their production techniques to meet new demands and challenges. One of the key focuses of this research is the impact of colonial policies on specific industries such as weaving, pottery-making, leatherwork, and agriculture in Daura District. By analyzing primary source materials and engaging with local communities, this study aims to shed light on the ways in which traditional industries were transformed or preserved in the face of colonial pressures. Additionally, the research examines the social and cultural significance of indigenous industries in Daura, highlighting their role in community identity, economic sustainability, and resistance to colonial hegemony. Overall, this research project contributes to the growing scholarship on colonial economic history and indigenous entrepreneurship in Africa. By centering the experiences of the indigenous people in Daura District, this study provides valuable insights into the complexities of colonial economic policies and their lasting effects on local industries. Through a nuanced examination of the interactions between colonial authorities and indigenous producers, this research offers a deeper understanding of the dynamics of economic change and continuity in a colonial setting.
