The Eyo festival is a traditional cultural celebration in Lagos, Nigeria, known for its vibrant display of colorful masquerades, music, and dance. This research project aims to explore the functions and aesthetics of the Eyo festival, examining how it serves various social, cultural, and religious purposes within the Yoruba community. Through a combination of fieldwork observations, interviews with key participants, and analysis of historical and cultural sources, this study delves into the significance of the Eyo festival as a form of cultural expression and identity. The functions of the Eyo festival are multi-faceted, encompassing both symbolic and practical aspects. On a symbolic level, the festival serves as a means of honoring the ancestors and invoking their blessings for the community. The elaborate masquerades and rituals performed during the festival are believed to connect the living with the spiritual realm, fostering a sense of continuity and harmony within the community.
