Abstract
Examination malpractice in tertiary institutions is a prevalent issue that undermines the integrity and credibility of the education system. This research aims to identify and analyze the problems associated with examination malpractice in tertiary institutions. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews to gather data from students, teachers, and administrators. Findings from the research reveal several key problems contributing to examination malpractice, including lack of ethical values among students, pressure to excel academically, inadequate invigilation during exams, and the availability of technology for cheating. Additionally, the study highlights the role of societal attitudes towards education, where success is often valued over the means of achieving it. Furthermore, the research explores the consequences of examination malpractice on students, institutions, and the society at large. Academic dishonesty not only erodes the quality of education but also diminishes the value of academic credentials. Moreover, the prevalence of cheating undermines the efforts of honest students and creates an unfair academic environment. The study also investigates the existing measures and strategies employed to prevent examination malpractice in tertiary institutions. While institutions have implemented various policies and technologies to deter cheating, loopholes still exist that allow students to engage in malpractice. The research suggests the need for a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of examination malpractice, including promoting integrity, fostering ethical values, and enhancing the monitoring and enforcement of examination regulations. In conclusion, examination malpractice is a complex issue that requires collaborative efforts from students, teachers, administrators, and policymakers to combat effectively. By understanding the underlying problems and consequences of academic dishonesty, tertiary institutions can develop targeted interventions to promote a culture of academic integrity and uphold the credibility of the education system.
