Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The quality of groundwater in urban areas is a critical issue due to the increasing urbanization and potential contamination sources. This study aims to assess the groundwater quality in urban areas using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. The research was conducted to investigate the current status of groundwater quality, identify potential sources of contamination, and evaluate the spatial distribution of water quality parameters in selected urban areas. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, including the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter 2 presents a comprehensive literature review covering ten key aspects related to groundwater quality assessment and GIS technology. Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, laboratory analysis procedures, GIS tools and techniques, quality control measures, and data analysis methods. The methodology also includes a detailed description of the study area and the selection criteria for sampling locations. In Chapter 4, the findings of the groundwater quality assessment are discussed in detail. The results highlight the spatial distribution of key water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, nitrate, and heavy metal concentrations in the study area. The identification of potential sources of contamination and their impact on groundwater quality is also discussed. The conclusion and summary in Chapter 5 provide a comprehensive overview of the research findings, implications for urban water management, recommendations for future research, and the significance of the study in the context of sustainable urban development. Overall, this research contributes to enhancing our understanding of groundwater quality issues in urban areas and demonstrates the importance of integrating GIS technology in groundwater quality assessment. The findings of this study have implications for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental agencies in formulating effective strategies for the protection and management of groundwater resources in urban environments.

Thesis Overview

The project titled "Assessment of Groundwater Quality in Urban Areas Using GIS Technology" aims to investigate and analyze the quality of groundwater in urban areas with the aid of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Groundwater is a vital natural resource that serves as a primary source of drinking water for many urban communities. However, due to urbanization and various anthropogenic activities, the quality of groundwater in urban areas is increasingly under threat. The research will focus on utilizing GIS technology to assess key parameters such as pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, and heavy metal concentrations in groundwater samples collected from various locations within urban areas. GIS will be employed to create spatial maps, overlay data layers, and perform spatial analysis to visualize and interpret the groundwater quality data effectively. The project will commence with a detailed literature review to provide a comprehensive understanding of previous studies related to groundwater quality assessment, GIS applications in environmental studies, and the impact of urbanization on groundwater quality. The research methodology will involve the collection of groundwater samples from selected urban areas, laboratory analysis of water quality parameters, and the integration of data into GIS software for spatial analysis. The findings of the study will be critically discussed in Chapter Four, highlighting trends, patterns, and spatial variations in groundwater quality within urban areas. The implications of the results will be analyzed in the context of environmental management, public health, and sustainable urban development. In conclusion, this research project seeks to enhance our understanding of groundwater quality in urban areas and demonstrate the effectiveness of GIS technology in spatial analysis and visualization of environmental data. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental scientists in the sustainable management of groundwater resources in urban settings.
