Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The rapid increase in population and development along coastal areas has resulted in the degradation of land resources, posing significant environmental challenges. To address this issue, the application of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies has emerged as a valuable tool for assessing and monitoring land degradation in coastal areas. This thesis aims to investigate the effectiveness of RS and GIS in assessing land degradation and its implications for sustainable coastal management. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the study, presenting the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. The literature review in Chapter 2 explores ten key studies related to RS, GIS, land degradation, and coastal management. This comprehensive review sets the foundation for understanding the current state of research in the field and identifies gaps that this study aims to address. Chapter 3 details the research methodology, including data collection methods, satellite imagery analysis techniques, GIS modeling approaches, and statistical analysis methods. The methodology section also outlines the study area, data sources, and tools used for data processing and analysis. Through a systematic approach, this chapter aims to provide a clear framework for conducting the research and analyzing the findings. In Chapter 4, the discussion of findings delves into the results obtained from the RS and GIS analysis of land degradation in coastal areas. The chapter presents detailed insights into the extent and spatial distribution of land degradation, highlighting key factors contributing to the degradation process. Additionally, the chapter discusses the implications of these findings for coastal management practices and policy development. Lastly, Chapter 5 offers a conclusion and summary of the thesis, highlighting the key findings, implications, and recommendations for future research and practice. The conclusion emphasizes the significance of RS and GIS technologies in assessing land degradation and promoting sustainable coastal management strategies. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the application of RS and GIS in addressing environmental challenges in coastal areas. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the utility of RS and GIS in assessing land degradation in coastal areas, providing valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners involved in coastal management. By leveraging these technologies, it is possible to enhance our understanding of land degradation processes, facilitate informed decision-making, and promote sustainable development practices along coastal regions.
