Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis explores the application of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in monitoring land use and land cover changes in a coastal environment. The study aims to investigate how these advanced technologies can be utilized to analyze and track changes in land use and land cover patterns along coastal regions, which are vulnerable to environmental degradation and natural disasters. The research is motivated by the need to better understand and manage coastal areas, given their ecological importance and susceptibility to various anthropogenic and natural disturbances. Through the integration of Remote Sensing data and GIS tools, this study seeks to provide a comprehensive assessment of land use and land cover dynamics in a specific coastal region, with the ultimate goal of informing sustainable planning and management strategies. The methodology involves the acquisition and processing of satellite imagery to generate land cover maps and assess changes over time. Additionally, field surveys and ground-truthing techniques will be employed to validate the remotely sensed data and enhance the accuracy of the analysis. Spatial analysis tools within GIS software will be utilized to conduct quantitative assessments of land use changes and identify areas of potential concern. The findings of this study are expected to contribute valuable insights into the dynamics of land use and land cover changes in coastal environments, shedding light on the drivers and implications of such transformations. By delineating patterns of change and identifying areas of high vulnerability, this research aims to support informed decision-making and policy development for sustainable coastal management. Overall, this thesis presents a detailed investigation into the integration of Remote Sensing and GIS technologies for monitoring land use and land cover changes in a coastal environment. By leveraging the capabilities of these tools, the study offers a robust framework for assessing environmental changes, enhancing spatial planning, and promoting the conservation of coastal ecosystems. The outcomes of this research have the potential to inform resource management practices, climate change adaptation strategies, and disaster risk reduction initiatives in coastal regions, thereby contributing to the long-term resilience and sustainability of these critical ecosystems.
