Abstract
The rapid growth of social media platforms has significantly altered how individuals communicate, interact, and access information. As social media continues to evolve, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on mental health. This thesis explores the relationship between social media use and mental health from a General Studies perspective. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the research topic, outlining the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and the structure of the thesis. Definitions of key terms are also provided to establish a common understanding of the concepts discussed throughout the thesis. Chapter two presents a comprehensive literature review that examines existing research on the impact of social media on mental health. The review covers ten key areas, including social comparison, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), self-esteem, loneliness, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, addiction, and overall psychological well-being. Chapter three details the research methodology employed in this study. The methodology section includes the research design, population and sample, data collection methods, data analysis techniques, ethical considerations, and the limitations of the research approach. By following this methodology, the study aims to provide a rigorous analysis of the relationship between social media use and mental health. Chapter four presents a detailed discussion of the findings derived from the research. The chapter analyzes the data collected and explores the various ways in which social media impacts mental health. The discussion covers both positive and negative effects, highlighting the complexity of the relationship between social media use and mental well-being. Finally, chapter five offers a conclusion and summary of the thesis. The conclusion synthesizes the key findings of the study and provides insights into the implications of the research. Recommendations for future research and practical interventions are also discussed to address the growing concerns surrounding social media and mental health.
