Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The brewing industry in Nigeria generates a significant amount of wastewater that contains various chemicals and pollutants. This study aimed to investigate the chemical characteristics of wastewater from Nigeria Breweries in order to assess its potential environmental impact and propose suitable treatment methods. Samples of wastewater were collected from different points in the brewery's wastewater treatment plant over a period of six months. The samples were analyzed for pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), total solids (TS), and various heavy metal concentrations. The results revealed that the wastewater from Nigeria Breweries had a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (6.5-7.5), indicating the presence of organic acids and other acidic compounds. The BOD and COD levels were found to be significantly high, suggesting a high organic content in the wastewater. The TSS and TDS concentrations exceeded the permissible limits set by regulatory bodies, indicating poor sedimentation and filtration processes in the treatment plant. Additionally, the levels of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium were found to be above the acceptable limits, posing a potential risk to the environment and public health. Overall, the chemical characteristics of wastewater from Nigeria Breweries indicate a high level of pollution and environmental impact. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the brewery to improve its wastewater treatment processes and adopt more effective treatment methods to reduce the discharge of pollutants into the environment. Implementing advanced treatment technologies such as activated sludge process, membrane filtration, and chemical precipitation can help in reducing the organic load, suspended solids, and heavy metals in the wastewater. Moreover, proper monitoring and regular maintenance of the treatment plant are essential to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the chemical characteristics of wastewater from Nigeria Breweries and highlights the importance of implementing efficient wastewater treatment practices to mitigate environmental pollution. By improving the treatment processes and adopting appropriate technologies, the brewery can minimize its environmental footprint and contribute to sustainable water management practices in Nigeria.
