Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Microplastics, ubiquitous in the environment due to their widespread use and persistence, have emerged as a significant environmental concern. This study investigates the impact of microplastics on freshwater ecosystems, focusing on a local river as a case study. The research aims to understand the distribution, sources, and potential ecological implications of microplastics in the freshwater environment. A multi-faceted approach combining field surveys, laboratory analyses, and ecological assessments will be employed to achieve the research objectives. The study begins with a comprehensive review of literature on microplastics in freshwater ecosystems, exploring the current state of knowledge, key findings, and gaps in understanding. Methodologies for sampling, identification, and quantification of microplastics in water, sediment, and biota will be discussed in detail. The research will also investigate the potential pathways through which microplastics enter freshwater systems, including urban runoff, industrial discharges, and atmospheric deposition. Field surveys will be conducted along the selected river to assess the spatial distribution and abundance of microplastics. Water and sediment samples will be collected at various sites to determine the composition, size, and shape of microplastics present. Additionally, biota from different trophic levels will be sampled to investigate the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of microplastics in the food web. Laboratory analyses will involve the use of microscopy and spectroscopy techniques to characterize and identify microplastics in environmental samples. Polymer type, size distribution, and surface properties of microplastics will be determined to understand their environmental fate and behavior. Ecological assessments will focus on the potential impacts of microplastics on freshwater organisms, including physical harm, ingestion, and transfer of contaminants. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the distribution and ecological implications of microplastics in freshwater ecosystems. By elucidating the sources and pathways of microplastic pollution, this research aims to contribute to the development of effective mitigation strategies and management practices. The significance of the study lies in its potential to inform policy decisions, raise awareness among stakeholders, and promote sustainable environmental stewardship. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the urgent need for further research and action to address the growing threat of microplastics to freshwater ecosystems. By enhancing our understanding of the impacts of microplastics on aquatic environments, we can work towards mitigating their detrimental effects and preserving the health and integrity of these vital ecosystems.
