Abstract
Coral reefs are among the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world, providing critical habitat for marine biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people. However, coral reefs are facing unprecedented threats from climate change, including rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events. Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established as a key strategy for conserving coral reefs and mitigating the impacts of climate change. This thesis presents an assessment of the impact of climate change on coral reef ecosystems in a marine protected area, focusing on understanding the current status of coral reefs, identifying the key threats posed by climate change, and evaluating the effectiveness of existing conservation measures. Chapter One provides an introduction to the study, outlining the background of the research, stating the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and defining key terms. The literature review in Chapter Two examines ten key studies related to the impact of climate change on coral reefs and the role of marine protected areas in conservation efforts. Chapter Three details the research methodology, including data collection methods, study area description, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. In Chapter Four, the findings of the study are discussed in detail, focusing on the current status of coral reefs in the marine protected area, the impact of climate change on coral reef ecosystems, and the effectiveness of conservation strategies in mitigating these impacts. The discussion covers key themes such as coral bleaching, ocean acidification, habitat degradation, and species loss. Finally, Chapter Five presents the conclusion and summary of the thesis, highlighting the key findings, implications for coral reef conservation, and recommendations for future research and management strategies.
