Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Informal activities play a significant role in daily life, contributing to social interactions, community cohesion, and overall well-being. However, planning for informal activities has often been overlooked in urban and community planning processes. This research project aims to address this gap by examining the importance of incorporating informal activities into the planning and design of urban spaces. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with community members and stakeholders, as well as quantitative data analysis of urban spaces and their current usage patterns. By understanding the needs and preferences of residents regarding informal activities, the research seeks to inform planning strategies that can better support and enhance these activities within communities. Findings from the research suggest that informal activities are not only essential for social connectedness but also contribute to the vitality and vibrancy of neighborhoods. However, challenges such as lack of designated spaces, safety concerns, and competing land uses often hinder the facilitation of informal activities within urban areas. Therefore, the study proposes recommendations for planners and policymakers to consider when designing and managing urban spaces to accommodate informal activities effectively. The results highlight the importance of creating inclusive and flexible spaces that can accommodate a diverse range of informal activities, such as community gatherings, street performances, and spontaneous play. Furthermore, promoting a culture of placemaking and grassroots initiatives can empower residents to take ownership of their public spaces and contribute to the co-creation of vibrant community hubs. Overall, this research underscores the need for a more holistic approach to urban planning that recognizes the value of informal activities in shaping the social fabric of neighborhoods. By integrating informal activities into the planning process, cities can foster stronger social connections, promote community well-being, and create more livable and sustainable urban environments for all residents.

Thesis Overview

The Urban settlement over the world witness great influx of people from the rural area. These people move to the urban centres because of the basic infrastructure and services rendered.

The white collar job (Formal activities) cannot cater for the increased population; as such, informal activities takes off. These informal activities if not planned and controlled, contravene the provision of the planned Urban settlement.
