Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Solid waste landfilling is a common method of waste disposal worldwide, but it poses significant environmental impacts. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the environmental consequences associated with solid waste landfilling. The key areas of focus include air pollution, water contamination, and soil degradation. One of the primary environmental concerns related to landfilling is air pollution. Landfills emit various gases, including methane and volatile organic compounds, which contribute to air quality degradation and climate change. These gases are produced during the decomposition of organic waste in anaerobic conditions. Additionally, particulate matter and odors released from landfills can negatively impact local air quality and human health. Water contamination is another significant issue linked to solid waste landfilling. Leachate, a liquid formed as water percolates through the waste layers, contains various pollutants such as heavy metals, organic compounds, and pathogens. If not properly managed, leachate can seep into groundwater and surface water bodies, leading to contamination and ecosystem harm. Furthermore, the production of leachate poses a risk of polluting drinking water sources, endangering public health. The disposal of solid waste in landfills can also result in soil degradation. Landfilled waste may contain hazardous substances that can leach into the soil, affecting its quality and fertility. The compaction of waste layers and the alteration of natural soil composition can disrupt the soil ecosystem and impede its ability to support vegetation growth. Moreover, the physical presence of landfills alters land use patterns and can lead to habitat loss and fragmentation. In conclusion, solid waste landfilling has significant environmental implications, including air pollution, water contamination, and soil degradation. To mitigate these impacts, proper landfill siting, engineering design, and management practices are essential. Implementing advanced landfill technologies such as gas collection systems and leachate treatment facilities can help reduce environmental harm. Additionally, waste reduction, recycling, and composting initiatives can decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills, thereby alleviating environmental pressures. Overall, a holistic approach that integrates sustainable waste management practices is crucial to minimizing the environmental footprint of solid waste landfilling.

Thesis Overview

Inevitable consequences of the practice of solid waste disposal in landfills are gas and leachate generation due primarily to microbial decomposition, climatic conditions, refuse characteristics and landfilling operations. The migration of gas and leachate away from the landfill boundaries and their release into the surrounding environment present serious environmental concerns at both existing and new facilities. Besides potential health hazards, these concerns include, and are not limited to, fires and explosions, vegetation damage, unpleasant odors, landfill settlement, ground water pollution, air pollution and global warming. This paper presents an overview of gas and leachate formation mechanisms in landfills and their adverse environmental impacts, and describes control methods to eliminate or minimize these impacts.
