Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Justice and the environment are two interconnected concepts that have gained increasing attention in both academic and policy circles. The notion of environmental sustainability, which is central to discussions on the environment, has been deeply linked to questions of justice. This research project aims to explore the diverse conceptions of environmental sustainability and how they intersect with various understandings of justice. The concept of environmental sustainability encompasses the idea of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition involves considerations of ecological, social, and economic dimensions, highlighting the complex and multifaceted nature of sustainability. However, different conceptions of environmental sustainability exist, ranging from anthropocentric views that prioritize human well-being to ecocentric perspectives that emphasize the intrinsic value of nature. In parallel, justice in the context of the environment involves questions of distribution, recognition, and participation. Distributive justice concerns the fair allocation of environmental benefits and burdens among different social groups, taking into account issues of equity and fairness. Recognition justice focuses on acknowledging diverse perspectives, values, and knowledge systems in environmental decision-making processes. Participatory justice underscores the importance of inclusive participation and empowerment of marginalized groups in environmental governance. This research project will critically examine how various conceptions of environmental sustainability interact with different dimensions of justice. By analyzing the ways in which these concepts are conceptualized and operationalized in academic literature, policy documents, and practical initiatives, this study seeks to identify commonalities, divergences, and potential synergies between sustainability and justice frameworks. Moreover, this research will investigate how environmental injustices, such as disproportionate exposure to pollution or lack of access to green spaces, can be addressed through more robust sustainability practices that integrate principles of justice. By exploring case studies and examples from diverse geographical contexts and social settings, this project aims to provide insights into how justice and sustainability can be mutually reinforcing in efforts to promote environmental well-being and societal equity. Overall, this research project contributes to ongoing debates on the relationship between justice and the environment, shedding light on the complexities and nuances of achieving environmental sustainability in a just and equitable manner.

Thesis Overview

Introduction

Disaster refers to an emergency caused by natural hazards or human induced actions resulting in a significant change in circumstances over a relatively short time period.Distributive Justice Typical examples are death, displacement, disease, loss of crops, damage to physical and service infrastructure, depletion of natural and social capitals, institutional weakening and a general disruption of economic and social activity.

Distributive Justice A broad definition of disasters include the fact that they are dramatic, sudden, unscheduled events that are often accompanied by large losses of human life, suffering and affliction to a society or a significant part of it, and a temporary breakdown of prevailing lifelines and systems. Such events cause considerable material damages and interrupt the normal functioning of an economy and of society in general (Otero and Marti, 1995).Distributive Justice.
