Abstract
Air pollution control within an industrial environment is a critical aspect of environmental management, especially in regions with high industrial activities such as the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State, Nigeria. This case study aims to investigate the current air pollution control measures in place at the Port Harcourt Refinery and evaluate their effectiveness in reducing emissions and protecting air quality. The study will focus on key pollutants emitted by the refinery, including particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. The research will involve a comprehensive review of existing literature on air pollution control strategies, regulations, and technologies applicable to industrial settings. Additionally, site visits and air quality monitoring will be conducted at the refinery to assess the concentration of pollutants in the ambient air and compare these levels with regulatory standards. The data collected will be analyzed to identify potential sources of emissions and evaluate the performance of the refinery's pollution control systems. Furthermore, the study will investigate the challenges faced by the Port Harcourt Refinery in achieving compliance with air quality regulations and explore opportunities for improving pollution control measures. This may include the adoption of cleaner technologies, optimization of existing control systems, and implementation of better monitoring and reporting practices. The research will also consider the economic implications of implementing enhanced pollution control measures and the potential benefits in terms of public health and environmental sustainability.
