Thesis Abstract

Land tenure systems play a crucial role in shaping land use patterns and development outcomes in many countries, including Nigeria. This study focuses on the land tenure system in Ikeduru Local Government Area (LGA) in Imo State, specifically within the context of Owerri Municipal Council. The research aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the existing land tenure arrangements in the study area and their implications for land use planning and sustainable development. The research methodology involves a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and archival research to gather information on the historical evolution of land tenure systems in Ikeduru LGA and their current status. The study will also examine the legal framework governing land tenure in the area, including customary practices and formal land tenure regulations. One of the key objectives of the research is to assess the effectiveness of the existing land tenure system in promoting secure land rights and facilitating sustainable land management practices. By analyzing the tenure arrangements in Ikeduru LGA, the study seeks to identify strengths and weaknesses in the current system and propose recommendations for improvement. Furthermore, the research will investigate the impact of land tenure insecurity on land use decisions, investment patterns, and economic development in the study area. By understanding how land tenure practices influence development outcomes, policymakers and planners can design more effective strategies to promote sustainable land management and inclusive growth. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on land tenure systems in Nigeria and provide valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working in the fields of land use planning and sustainable development. By focusing on a specific case study within Ikeduru LGA, the research aims to generate context-specific knowledge that can inform targeted interventions to address land tenure challenges in the study area. Overall, this research project underscores the importance of understanding local land tenure systems in shaping broader development trajectories. By examining the case of Ikeduru LGA in Imo State, the study aims to shed light on the complexities of land tenure arrangements in Nigeria and highlight opportunities for enhancing land governance practices to support sustainable development goals.
