Abstract
Outdoor air pollution is a significant environmental health issue in Nigeria, with implications for the population's well-being. This research aims to review the current knowledge on the health impact of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria and identify future research needs in this area. The sources of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria include vehicular emissions, industrial activities, biomass burning, and other anthropogenic sources. These pollutants have been linked to various adverse health outcomes, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and even premature mortality. Existing studies in Nigeria have highlighted the association between outdoor air pollution and respiratory health effects, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Additionally, cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension and stroke, have also been associated with exposure to outdoor air pollution. Vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, are particularly at risk of experiencing the health impacts of air pollution. Despite the growing body of evidence on the health effects of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria, there are still several knowledge gaps that need to be addressed. These include the need for more long-term studies to assess the chronic health effects of air pollution, the lack of comprehensive air quality monitoring networks across the country, and the need for targeted interventions to reduce exposure to air pollutants in high-risk areas. Future research in this area should focus on improving air quality monitoring infrastructure, conducting longitudinal studies to better understand the long-term health impacts of air pollution, and implementing policies and interventions to reduce emissions and protect public health. Collaborative efforts between researchers, policymakers, and public health practitioners are essential to address the health impact of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria effectively. In conclusion, outdoor air pollution poses a significant health risk to the Nigerian population, with implications for respiratory and cardiovascular health. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach that includes research, policy development, and public health interventions. By addressing the current knowledge gaps and prioritizing future research needs, Nigeria can work towards mitigating the health impact of outdoor air pollution and improving the well-being of its population.
