Abstract
Landfills are significant sources of methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. In Nigeria, as in many developing countries, landfill management practices are often inadequate, leading to increased methane emissions. This study aims to investigate the effect of methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria, focusing on the sources, trends, and potential mitigation strategies. The research will utilize a combination of field measurements, remote sensing data, and modeling techniques to assess the current status of methane emissions from landfills across different regions in Nigeria. Field measurements will involve the collection of gas samples from landfills to determine methane concentrations and emission rates. Remote sensing data, including satellite imagery, will be used to map landfill locations and monitor changes in land use patterns that may affect methane emissions. The study will also analyze the factors contributing to methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria, such as waste composition, landfill design, and operational practices. By identifying the key sources of methane emissions, the research aims to provide insights into potential mitigation strategies that can be implemented to reduce these emissions. Mitigation measures may include improved waste segregation and management practices, landfill gas collection and utilization, and the implementation of methane oxidation systems. Furthermore, the research will assess the potential impact of methane emissions from landfills on climate change and air quality in Nigeria. By quantifying the amount of methane released from landfills and its implications for global warming potential, the study aims to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of inadequate landfill management practices.
