Abstract
Urbanization has led to increased impervious surfaces, resulting in challenges related to stormwater management and water quality in urban areas. Green infrastructure (GI) practices have emerged as sustainable solutions to mitigate stormwater runoff issues and improve overall urban environmental quality. This thesis presents an assessment of the effectiveness of green infrastructure in urban stormwater management. The study aims to evaluate the performance of various green infrastructure practices in reducing stormwater runoff volume, improving water quality, and enhancing urban green spaces. The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review to understand the current state of green infrastructure implementation, challenges, and benefits. Data collection included field assessments of existing green infrastructure projects in urban areas, focusing on their design, performance, and maintenance practices. The study also involved the analysis of stormwater quality parameters to assess the impact of green infrastructure on water quality improvement. The findings indicate that green infrastructure practices such as green roofs, permeable pavements, bioretention systems, and rain gardens have shown significant potential in reducing stormwater runoff volume and improving water quality. Factors influencing the effectiveness of green infrastructure include design considerations, maintenance practices, site-specific characteristics, and community engagement. The discussion of findings highlights the importance of integrating green infrastructure into urban planning and development processes to achieve sustainable stormwater management goals. The study emphasizes the need for policy support, financial incentives, and public awareness campaigns to promote the widespread adoption of green infrastructure practices in urban areas. In conclusion, the assessment of green infrastructure effectiveness in urban stormwater management demonstrates its potential to address stormwater challenges, enhance urban resilience, and improve environmental quality. The study recommends further research on long-term performance monitoring, cost-benefit analysis, and stakeholder engagement to support the successful implementation of green infrastructure initiatives in urban environments. By integrating green infrastructure into urban planning and design practices, cities can create more sustainable and resilient urban landscapes for the benefit of both current and future generations.
