Abstract
Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that support diverse flora and fauna, provide essential ecological services, and play a significant role in maintaining biodiversity. However, wetlands worldwide face threats from human activities leading to degradation and loss of biodiversity. Wetland restoration has emerged as a key conservation strategy to mitigate these impacts and restore ecosystem functions. This thesis presents an assessment of the effectiveness of wetland restoration in biodiversity conservation, focusing on understanding the ecological outcomes of restoration efforts and evaluating the factors influencing restoration success. The study begins with a comprehensive review of literature on wetland restoration, biodiversity conservation, and factors affecting restoration outcomes. The review examines the importance of wetlands, the benefits of restoration, and the challenges associated with achieving successful outcomes. Drawing on existing research and case studies, the review highlights key considerations for planning and implementing effective wetland restoration projects. Methodologically, the research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative ecological assessments with qualitative stakeholder interviews. Field surveys are conducted in selected restored wetlands to evaluate biodiversity metrics such as species diversity, abundance, and ecosystem functions. Additionally, interviews with stakeholders including restoration practitioners, policymakers, and local communities provide insights into the social and institutional aspects of wetland restoration. The findings from the ecological assessments reveal varying degrees of success in biodiversity recovery following wetland restoration interventions. Factors such as wetland type, restoration techniques, and site-specific characteristics influence the outcomes of restoration efforts. The interviews shed light on the challenges faced by practitioners, including funding constraints, policy gaps, and community engagement issues. The study identifies the need for adaptive management approaches that integrate ecological and social considerations to enhance restoration success. In conclusion, the thesis discusses the implications of the findings for wetland restoration practice and biodiversity conservation. It emphasizes the importance of long-term monitoring, adaptive management, and stakeholder engagement in achieving sustainable outcomes. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on wetland restoration effectiveness and provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working in the field of biodiversity conservation.
